The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR), is set to meet with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in a renewed effort to end the ongoing nationwide strike.

According to a report by the Nigerian Tribune, the leadership of ASUU is expected to meet with President Buhari on Tuesday as part of last-minute moves to resolve the lingering industrial action.

In a related development, the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Abubakar Rasheed, also held a crucial meeting with Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian universities at the NUC headquarters.

The meeting formed part of a final push by the Federal Government to bring the prolonged ASUU strike to an end.

Speaking during the 2022 retreat for Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities and Directors of Inter-University Centres, Professor Rasheed revealed that some Vice-Chancellors would accompany him to another high-level meeting aimed at finding solutions to the strike.

According to him:

“Some Vice-Chancellors and I will go for a meeting later today in an effort to resolve the lingering ASUU strike.”

The NUC boss lamented that the over five-month-old strike embarked upon by ASUU has had serious and negative implications for the future of university education and students in Nigeria.

He sympathised with Vice-Chancellors over the pressure and trauma the prolonged shutdown has placed on them and their institutions.

He explained that the retreat was organised to focus on:

  • finding lasting stability in tertiary institutions,

  • reviewing government efforts to end the strike, and

  • examining how universities manage and utilise their resources during the closure.

He further described the situation as unfortunate, noting that the retreat was taking place at a time when the Nigerian university system was already in crisis due to the prolonged strike by ASUU and other staff unions.

According to him, the retreat would allow Vice-Chancellors and other stakeholders to brainstorm on practical ways to reposition and move Nigerian universities forward.
