FAQs: PDP Knocks Oyetola-Led Government as Osun Declines to 36th Position in WAEC Ranking

What prompted the PDP’s criticism of the Osun government?

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) criticised the administration of Gboyega Oyetola after Osun State ranked 36th in a national performance index of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). The party described the ranking as shameful and blamed it on poor management of the education sector.

How bad was Osun State’s WAEC performance ranking?

Osun State was ranked 36th out of 36 states (plus the FCT), effectively placing it among the lowest-performing states nationwide in the WAEC performance index for public secondary schools.

What reasons did PDP give for the poor performance?

The PDP accused the government of:

  • Neglecting the education sector

  • Failing to employ qualified teachers in key subjects

  • Misplacing priorities by not investing adequately in schools

The party argued that these issues led directly to the poor WAEC outcome.

Did PDP make any demands or recommendations?

Yes, the PDP called on the Oyetola-led government to:

  • Apologise to the people of Osun State

  • Take responsibility for the decline in educational standards

  • Prioritise reforms that would improve teaching quality and student performance

They also promised better educational policies under their leadership.

What broader issue does this controversy highlight?

The situation highlights ongoing concerns about the quality of public education in Nigeria, particularly the importance of:

  • Adequate funding

  • Qualified teachers

  • Effective education policies

It also reflects how education performance is often used as a political benchmark to assess government effectiveness.
