WHEN IS EDUCATION DAY IN NEPAL

Nepal celebrates Education Day every year to emphasize the importance of education and to promote educational activities nationwide. This day also serves as an opportunity to review the development of education in the country.

History of Education in Nepal

• Modern Education Introduction: The development of modern education in Nepal is credited to the Rana regime (1846–1951). Jang Bahadur Rana, a key figure of the regime, was instrumental in initiating formal education systems.

• English Education: English education was introduced during the Rana period as part of modernization efforts.

Education System in Nepal

Traditionally, Nepal followed a three-tier sixteen-year education system:

1. Primary and Secondary Education: 10 years

2. College-Level Education: 4 years

3. Master’s Studies: 2 years

Before formal schooling, education was mainly oral and practical—knowledge, skills, and values were passed from adults to children through storytelling and imitation.

• Currently, the government is considering alternate dates, such as the establishment day of Darbar High School, to mark National Education Day.

How It Is Celebrated

• Programs are held at educational institutions under the Ministry of Education’s guidance.

• Activities include awareness campaigns, tree planting, and publications on literacy and education.

• International Literacy Day in 2020 focused on:
  “Literacy teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis and beyond”—highlighting the evolving role of educators and new teaching methods.
